The Villa Park Orchards (VPO) Packinghouse's maintenance and fertilizer shed was relocated to a property 800 feet away, leaving the historic property vacant and ready to be transformed into a multi-use building for Chapman University.
The new property would consist of student services/food service, an art gallery, and storage for the university.
Architectural Resource Consultants (ARC) provided HDS (High Definition Survey) 3D Laser Scanning and Modeling services for the creation of an existing conditions BIM (Building Information Model) of portions of the VPO property. The area of interest consisted of 3 buildings: the packinghouse, aprox. 100,000 s.f.; the storage building, approx. 5,000 s.f.; and the shop/garage building, approx. 2,775 s.f.
The scanning process lasted about seven days, the data registration took 6 days, and about 5-6 weeks were allocated for modeling.
ARC provided a comprehensive BIM including architectural and structural elements as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) elements larger than 4”. The use of 3D laser scanning also allowed ARC to provide a 360 degree VR (virtual reality) tour of the space inside and out. The final deliverables were used by the owner and architect to prepare design and construction documents for the project.
