On July 23, 2017, a house fire in Kearney, Nebraska took the life of a 60-year-old woman. The fire was believed to be of suspicious origin and was further investigated as arson.
Architectural Resource Consultants (ARC) was hired to provide HDS (High Definition Survey) 3D laser scanning services. Laser scanning data contains more detail and perspective than regular photo-imagery, provides accurate measurements, and rich three-dimensional data. These qualities provide investigators with the ability to reconstruct a crime scene with vivid detail.
The scan team needed to wear protective gear such as face masks and boots for both personal protection and prevention of contaminating any crime scene evidence. The data registration process lasted about four days and the client was provided with colorized, registered scan data and TruView imagery.
