Architectural Resource Consultants (ARC) was hired to provide scanning and modeling services to document existing elements of interior architecture, fire protection, structural, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems within arrival sectors 3 and 4 of LAX Airport Terminal 2 and various areas of Terminals 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Existing conditions data was captured using HDS (High Definition Survey) 3D laser scanners and this data was then registered, cleaned, and unified.
Much of the area of interest (AOI) in Terminal 2 included work in long stretches of public concourse space, electrical rooms, and above ceilings in public areas. Electrical room scans included structural elements as well as conduct and ductwork. For this terminal, a “background” model was also developed with a low level of development for the existing architecture in order to provide a container for other model elements that ARC provided. Scanning of the baggage area presented challenges due to the fast-paced surroundings; however, ARC was able to successfully complete the project while the airport remained fully operational.
