In 2015, the Westfield Topanga and The Village shopping center sought to urbanize their site. Architectural Resource Consultants (ARC) was hired to provide HDS (High Definition Survey) 3D laser scanning and modeling services to document portions of the building and Westfield Topanga mall site in order to begin plans for renovations.
The documented building, formerly a Sears department store, sat vacant and was slated for demolition. The owner was in need of an accurate as-built to locate some of the existing structural grids inside the Sears building as well as a portion of the mall adjoining the Sears building. For the Sears building, the primary focus was on the structural grid and the mall area was focused on both the structural grid and general architectural elements within the areas of interest (AOI). Other areas that were documented included the roof, an exterior area between Sears and Nordstrom, and an exterior area on the west side of the mall that is directly above the Sears.
The 160,000-square-foot store will be turned into an upscale dining and entertainment district that will include restaurants, a new movie theater, and bowling alley. The grand entrance will be facing Victory Boulevard and will serve as a connecter between the Westfield Topanga and The Village shopping centers, which will make the area more walkable and accessible to shoppers.
