The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center is located in downtown Richmond. ARC was hired to lead scan crews to obtain data to provide a pre-demolition / existing conditions scan-to-BIM of portions of the 24/7 operational VCUMC.

Scanning of the location took place over a period of three weeks, with a team of five surveyors running multiple scanners while working 10 - 12 hour shifts (usually during nights and weekends to minimize disruption to ongoing hospital activities). Following the registration of acquired scans, ARC’s team of multiple modelers represented approximately 142,000 s.f. of both above ceiling and below ceiling data, over a period of about three to four months.

The data capture area of interest (AOI) totaled ~142,000 s.f.  Of this, ~ 54,000 s.f. required infection control during above ceiling scanning while ~ 58,000 s.f. did not, and the final ~30,000 s.f. consisted of mechanical rooms.

The scanning crew used multiple Hepacarts to capture any debris and dust falling from the ceiling. This ensured that the debris did not contaminate the rest of the building. This was critical for the hospital to remain fully functional and keep their patients away from any potentially hazardous materials.

Deliverables for this project included 3D models of plenum space derived from laser scan data as well as TruView imagery. The models were used to help coordinate construction plans for renovation planning.
